Great Bluesman, Great Book, Great Editing
This book is money well spent, especially if you are a fan of BB King or the blues. Not only is it well-written, but the selective editing of Anson Pope keeps the focus concise and delightful. One of the best music books I've read in a long time.

Babylonian Magic and Sorcery: Being the Prayers of the Lifting of the Hand: The Cuneiform Texts of a Group of Babylonian and Assyrian Incantations and Magical Formulae Edited with
Published in Hardcover by Red Wheel/Weiser (December, 2000)
Author: Leonard W. King
Average review score:

A Highly technical manual
This book is definately not designed for the novice, rather a professional of Babylonian studies. The book covers Babylonian and Assyrian incantations, ceremomies, and prayers from the 76 cuneiform tablets in the excavation of Nineavah. They were found in the site of Kuyunjuik. The prayers of "lifting the hand" are presented in full with as much technical and related material as possible. The book presents each ritual with details on how to preform the rituals, libations to deities, and what is needed to complete the rituals. The book does contain details to help the novice such as the tablets themselves, an extensive vocabulary, notes, and explainations. There is a good forward from R.A. Gilbert and preface from King himself explaining his expectations of the material. All in all the book does stand up to those expectations and some. One of the most complete Babylonian books that i've ever read. a great compliment and companion to Semetic Magic by Cambell Thompson (1908).

The Battle of Vicksburg (Civil War (Blackbirch Press).)
Published in School & Library Binding by Blackbirch Marketing (September, 2001)
Author: David C. King
Average review score:

A concise juvenile history of Grant's siege of Vicksburg
There are only four volumes dealing with battles in the Civil War Series (to date) and they are the pivotal battles of Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. Actually, that last one, and the subject of this juvenile history by David C. King, was a long drawn on campaign (March 31-July 4, 1863) that was ultimately more of a siege than a battle. The book begins by establishing the importance of Vicksburg as "The Gibraltar of the West" and the key to the Mississippi River (although Winfield Scott's Anaconda plan is not specifically mentioned). The campaign is broken down into discrete units, such as the Battle of Champion Hill and the actual 47 day siege.

The result is a concise and informative history of the Vicksburg campaign and its significance. This was a fairly complex campaign and King gives young readers a clear sense of what happened. A final section explains how the fate of the Confederacy was sealed by the fall of Vicksburg. The book is illustrated with historic photographs and etchings, along with a map showing how Grant moved on the Confederate stronghold. Sidebars go into details on the commanders of both armies, the attempt by the Federals to blow up a hole in the Rebel lines, and a look at the artillery used in the battle.

"The Battle of Vicksburg" is part of the Triangle Histories of the Civil War, where the idea is that the subject is covered from various angles, in this case a battle like Vicksburg, a leader like Ulysses S. Grant, and a President, in this case Abraham Lincoln. However, there is no explicit attempt to link up the books and the overlap is essentially the same as what you would have with any juvenile series of histories and/or biographies dealing with the Civil War. This does not detract form tese being an informative series of little books.
